WHY Afterschool Programs?
Many youth-serving organizations believe that afterschool programs are critical to children and families today.  The need for these programs, however, is not adequately addressed.  As many as 15 million children have no place to go after the last bell rings.  These children are more likely to be victims of crime, or to participate in risky behaviors.

Children in afterschool programs, however, have improved grades, better behavior, and higher school attendance.  These programs help transform the afterschool hours into a time of learning, opportunity, and fun.  “The influence that you make at the early learning stages of a child’s life will make a difference in school, work, and in the community.  Teaching kids every-day business skills and finances will impact children to be proactive community leaders,” said Jennifer Johnson-Kelley, FLARE after-school volunteer from NCO Financial Systems, Inc.

Groups like FLARE have recognized Junior Achievement as an organization that meets children's afterschool needs.  As a result of these partnerships, Junior Achievement has been able to touch the lives of more and more young people in an afterschool setting.  Through JA's partnerships with local community organizations such as area YMCA's and Boys and Girls Clubs,  young people have the chance to benefit from Junior Achievement's message of opportunity and hope.
